Edwin van der Sar will officially be United's number one goalkeeper next season, after the Reds confirmed the team's squad numbers for the new Premiership season.

Van der Sar, previously No.19, takes the jersey occupied last term by Tim Howard, who will be spending the season on loan with Everton.

Italian teenage striker Giuseppe Rossi is expected to be a much more prominent figure following the departure of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who's No.10 shirt will be vacant this season. Rossi will wear the No.19 shirt.

Other additions or changes include Tomasz Kuszczak (29), David Jones (25) and Michael Carrick, who, of course, wears Roy Keane's old No.16 shirt number.

United close in ?7m Hargreaves

Manchester United were last night edging closer towards the ?7million signing of England international midfielder Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich.

Senior officials from United travelled to Germany yesterday to thrash out a deal for the 25-year-old with the Bundesliga club.

Having had a ?0m cash bid rejected earlier in the day United are now understood to be talking to Bayern about the finer details of a deal that would involve a ?3m down payment and a further ?m depending on appearances.

Hargreaves is believed to have told the German club of his desire to leave, having become increasingly desperate to move to Old Trafford since Sportsmail revealed the depth of United's interest last week.

Bayern have so far insisted that the player is not for sale, but the deal could be completed today.

Last night Hargreaves's agent Roman Grill said: "Owen wants to tell the club how he sees his future. The time has now come to evaluate where he is in his career.

"He will talk with the coach Felix Magath and see how he views things. As he has already said, Owen sees this as an excellent opportunity."

United already have a ?m deal in place with Villarreal to buy Marcos Senna but have put the transfer on hold as they try to land top target Hargreaves instead.

They were told by Senna's representatives that the 30-year-old will stay in Spain unless a deal is concluded today.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is aware that he cannot buy both players but is very hopeful that he will land Hargreaves, making Senna's threat irrelevant.

United captain Gary Neville has hit out at the FA for upholding three-match bans handed to Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes following their sendings-off in a pre-season game against Porto.

Neville said: "It's shocking but I'm not surprised. What annoys me is that in this country we don't look after our own."
