Wiese -6.5: The shot-stopper flapped on crosses all night and Milan took full advantage as they focused on wing play and high balls in order to test him. Wiese was unsure whether to come or go on a number of occasions and had the cross bar to thank following Inzaghi's second half strike. However, his first half stop on Flamini was top-class.
Fritz -5.5: Fritz showed great power and authority at the back to start with, but his game began to fade as the clock ticked away. He was completely at fault for Inzaghi's opener as a moment of madness allowed Flamini the time and space to cross and Werder fell behind.
Mertesacker -6.5: The very first chance of the game fell to the German international and he failed to take advantage, that is why he is a defender and not a striker. He completely fluffed from close range, but his defending was solid and he got forward regularly to help his side.
Naldo -6.0: One of Werder's better player's on the night. He showed an incredible work rate as he was all over the park. A good overall performance. He kept his head down and had his nose to the grindstone. The only failure was stopping Inzaghi from scoring.
Boenisch -7.0: The youngster is quickly becoming one the Bundesliga's best players and on this evidence, it's not hard to tell why. Excellent command of the left wing and he showed great talent and maturity with his selective play. He caused problems for Milan all night.
Tziolis -6.5: The Greek international was solid for his side on the night and he showed several glimpses of talent throughout the affair. However, he needs to brush up on his shooting if his side are to get anything in the return leg next week.
Baumann -5.5: The midfielder did not have any meaningful impact on the game. He drifted in and out and he failed to offer the type of play his coach was looking for. He was rightly replaced in the second half.
Ozil -6.0: Ozil was always ready to help his team-mates, but perhaps he didn't try hard enough to stamp his authority on the game. The odd decent pass here and there and this is where his game ended.
Diego -8.5: A real contender for man of the match. The ace started brightly and ended the game on an even more positive note as his late strike means his side live to fight another day. He pulled the strings and dictated the play, proving just why Juventus are lining up for him. Left Pirlo for dead on a number of times and grabbed a well deserved goal as a reward for his great showing.
Pizarro -7.0: The Peruvian international was always proving to be a nuisance to Milan on the night. His positional sense and eye for goal is class. The only thing missing was a goal. He fought hard and was incredibly unlucky not to add his name to the scoresheet.
Almeida -7.0: The Portuguese striker proved to be the thorn in Milan's side and his never say die attitude paid off as it was he who got the vital flick on for Diego's goal. Missed a few great chances, but kept his head up and never quit.

Milan
Dida -7.0: The Brazilian has been the number two goalkeeper at Milan this term, but this performance would suggest he should be number one. A good display in goal and he made a number of vital saves. However, he couldn't stop Diego's strike.
Bonera -6.0: The defender did not produce anything too special on the night. He was solid on the right, but at times he was also a little clumsy and lacking in concentration. He almost scored an own goal late on. Not one of his best performances.
Senderos -5.5: Another poor display from the on-loan man. The stopper was all at sea for Werder's equalizer as he let Almeida out of his sight and the striker took full advantage to knock the ball down for Diego. However, Senderos did make a life saving challenge on Pizarro with seconds to go.
Favalli -6.0:The veteran defender made himself useful by showing his bravery to block a number of high powered shots when other players would have ducked out of the way. His stop on Tziolis' long range drive was vital.
Zambrotta -8.0: He was one of the Rossoneri's best players without any doubt. His outstanding runs on the wing were pivotal and they made the difference. He attacked with intent and defended with authority as he led by example. Excellent passing and his interception on Pizarro's header was sublime.
Flamini -7.5: The former Arsenal man was very impressive. He does all the dirty work, but does it cleanly and with attention to detail. He was wide awake in every sense and he took full advantage to help create the goal for his side.
Pirlo -6.0: His performances have been average recently and nothing changed in Germany. A combination of good and bad play painted a mixed picture for the Italian midfielder. Silly fouls combined with giving possession away made for a less than perfect display. Pirlo didn't really show a will to fight back for his side.
Ambrosini -5.5: Reckless and over enthusiastic with his challenges. He has to thank a very lenient referee for being able to stay on the pitch for the whole 93 minutes. He was pretty much sleeping for Diego's goal as he lost sight of the Brazilian ace when he should have been first in for the ball. A good first half, but a relatively poor second.
Seedorf -7.0: Showed great pace for a 32-year-old as he blitzed Mertesacker on a number of times. His passing and vision remains focal to the Rossoneri's play and he showed his best touches n the night. A good and hard working display.
Ronaldinho -6.5: The Brazilian didn't do anything particular which stood out or which was worthy of any high praise. He made the odd decent pass, but was unable to prove himself in the absence of Kaka. He was replaced later on as Carlo Ancelotti became fed up of seeing his Brazilian fail to make an impact.
Inzaghi -7.5: The Milan number 9 is always in the right place at the right time. As usual, Inzaghi warmed up by fooling the Bremen defence with his offside tactics and then pounced when the Germans least expected it. A great finish and was unlucky not to have grabbed a second as he hit the crossbar.
