在夏季转会窗口关闭前，托特纳姆热刺宣布放人，英超和欧冠卫冕冠军曼联终于成功签下保加利亚射手贝尔巴托夫，结束今夏最曲折的一段转会闹剧，贝巴新赛季将穿上萨哈留下的曼联9号球衣。曼联将为贝巴支付3075万镑，另外让小将弗雷泽尔-坎贝尔租借加盟热刺。
在9月1日之前，贝尔巴托夫加盟曼联似乎已经没有悬念。然而，转会期的最后一天，更换了阿联酋富豪老板的曼城突然出手，3000万镑的高价让贝尔巴托夫的去向再次产生疑问。然而，就在曼城主帅马克-休斯宣布俱乐部的报价得到热刺接受，他希望会晤贝巴商讨转会事宜的时候。弗格森已经悄悄以个人名义到曼彻斯特机场，接走乘坐私人飞机抵达的贝尔巴托夫。
