We have never been so confused by a modern video game as we have by Bayonetta Origins. Not because of the gameplay, which is so trivial we thought we were still playing the tutorial for hours into the main game, but because it seems to be an experience carefully, and specifically, designed to appeal to no one. That doesn’t mean it isn’t without its pleasures, or that it’s badly made, but we genuinely have no idea who this is aimed at.
We’re not being facetious when we say we don’t know who the audience for this game is supposed to be, as it has almost no gameplay connection with the main Bayonetta titles. You play as a young Bayonetta, when she was referred to simply as Cereza, but she has no offensive abilities whatsoever. If you’re somehow deeply invested in the lore of the series, there’s a few snippets here and there but we don’t think you really learn anything of note about the universe or its characters that wasn’t at least hinted at in the originals.
In Short: A peculiarly pitched spin-off that has almost nothing to interest Bayonetta fans and instead offers an Ōkami Lite experience that is so undemanding it almost seems to run on autopilot. |
