The key phrase in the previous section is “when the game begins”. The opening segment in the reactor and the first section of Midgar look great but there’s a very noticeable loss in quality when you go to other parts of the city. There are two problems and they both involve textures. After you leave the first section of Midgar you’ll see some very low-resolution textures. Take a look at the mix of detailed high-res and blurry low-res textures in the above image. Textures on the character models are always high detail which makes the contrast with some of the low-res textures in the surrounding world jarring and distracting.
Texture loading is the second problem. Run and then stop and there’s a noticeable delay, sometimes in the neighborhood of three seconds, before some of the textures around you load. It happens frequently and is very noticeable. Digital Foundry tested the delayed texture pop-in on older and newer internal drives and external HDD and SSD drives and the problem was always there.
