Emulation News: RetroArch 1.8.3 released with OpenGL cores for XBOX ONE and more cores for PSP & NooDS gets a mostly complete 3D renderer
BY AURORA · JANUARY 11, 2020
With the second weekend of the new year being upon us, the release and exciting news streak of this year keeps on going with the leaked pictures of Team Xecuter’s hacking solution for the Switch 2 days ago and now, RetroArch 1.8.3 and some good news on NooDS’ end.
RetroArch 1.8.3 released with ANGLE (OpenGL ES support for all platforms), NetPlay enhancements & more cores for the PSP and PSVita
For those who don’t know, RetroArch is a front-end for numerous emulators and game engines available on many platforms and has become a highly popular solution for those who wish to emulate multiple systems without messing around with different standalone emulators. Recently, it received an unofficial PlayStation 4 port which now has 37 cores and good progress has been made on the PSP port thanks to the efforts of developer Francisco J. T.M..

RetroArch 1.8.3 is pretty minor for some ports but for the PSP port, it brings quite a good deal to the table!
Now, RetroArch 1.8.3 has been released just a little over 2 weeks after RetroArch 1.8.2 since the software is now on a rapid-release cycle in order to make improvements more readily available and increase the amount of user feedback. This update, which is quite significant for some systems, brings along:
Support for ANGLE, a piece of middleware by Google which is an OpenGL ES compatibility layer that translates OpenGL calls to Direct3D 9/11 ones
This is useful for graphics cards that don’t have an adequate OpenGL driver on certain operating systems (like Intel HD 2000/3000 on Windows 10) and the XBOX One as the latter only supports the Direct3D 11/12 APIs when it comes to graphics
ANGLE can only be used on the x64 Windows version and the UWP port. Obviously, cores need to be accelerated with a renderer making use of OpenGL ES 2/3’s feature set in order for ANGLE support to be implementable

The XBOX One has also seen some love with RetroArch 1.8.3 especially when it comes to Dreamcast and N64 cores
Right now, the only cores available with ANGLE support are Flycast and Mupen64Plus Nextwith the latter giving pretty good results on the XBOX One S
Instructions on how to use the ANGLE cores are found in the link below
Some improvements to Netplay which include the fixing of a critical bug which would make all players get disconnected from the relay server if one disconnects
The netplay lobby server code is slated for being rewritten from scratch in the near future so that it’s more stable
The PSP has gained a good number of cores including FreeIntv (Intellivision), MAME 2000 (Arcade), TGB Dual (GameBoy & GBC) and Handy (Atari Lynx)
The PSVita’s MAME 2000 and 2003 Plus also received some improvements as Cyclone and DrZ80 have been backported. A Reddit user describes their experience here
The 3DS’ port has gained RACE, a Neo Geo Pocket Colour emulator
It currently provides 45-50FPS on the old 3DS and fullspeed performance (60 FPS) on the New 3DS
The improvements described in the Libretro Cores Progress Report published 2 days ago
Numerous bug fixes which can be seen the release post below

Hydr8gon reports that NooDS now has an almost-done 3D renderer

While NooDS may not be the best DS emulator to use right now, its developer is pouring a good deal of work into it so only time will tell where it ends up!
Recently, the number of competitive Nintendo DS emulators has been on the rise as first we had melonDS by Arisoturaand now, NooDS by Hydr8gon is also seeing some pretty nice progress. Now, NooDS’ developer has shared with us that he’s been able to create a software-based 3D renderer for the emulatorwhich he notes isn’t fully complete but can handle some rendering in titles like Animal Crossing: Wild World.
Other than creating the renderer, Hydr8gon also notes that he’s posted two Patreon posts, which can be seen for free, about developing a 3D renderer for the DS which may be a pretty interesting read if you’re into more in-depth stuff in relation to emulation.
You may try out NooDS’ latest builds by clicking on the commit history and pressing the green checkmark on the latest commit – this link leads to the latest commit’s automatic build page. Currently, builds are available for Linux, Mac, Windows and the Nintendo Switch in NRO form. Donations can be made through Patreon
Conclusion
Other than these releases, the PSVita also received Volume Control Pack while GodMode 9 v1.9.1 has been released for the 3DS with much faster scrolling when word-wrap is enabled and more.
