Cliffy-B on Killzone 2 Dev: "I'm Professor X, he's Magneto." Our interview.
By Ben Kuchera | Published: July 12, 2007 - 10:48AM CT
At the Games for Windows event at E3, we were ushered into a magical room with playable stations with Bioshock, Crysis, and Gears of War for PC. I checked out the PC version of Gears of War, and noticed Cliffy-B also watching journalists play his game. I told him I was enjoying the soiree. "I don’t think this is technically a soiree," he said, "it’s more like a junket. I have junket in my trunket."
So, you know, you can imagine.
Cliffy-B was then gracious enough to answer a few of our questions.
Ben: So how long did you know Gears of War was coming to the PC?
Cliffy-B: A while now, yeah. At least six months, then I got asked about it and prodded and pushed and pulled, and I had to say 'Nope, I can’t say anything.' That’s just the way things are these days. You’re working on something and you always have to keep things in the queue and you have to be careful and show some discretion and not say anything.
Ben: The one thing I thought was great about the press conference, and I’m not sure if this was announced before, was that you said the game was coming to both Vista and XP. Was there pressure to bring it to Vista only? Halo 2 and Shadowrun got a little guff in the press...
Cliffy-B: There was some discussion of that, but ultimately we want the largest amount of gamers to experience Gears everywhere, on 360 as well as on PC. You know, Vista penetration isn’t that heavy, it’s not that deep right now. It will be, you know you buy a new PC you get Vista, that’s the way it’s going to go. But there are millions of people with XP out there that want to enjoy Gears like now, and don’t want to, you know, get Vista for it.
Ben: Gears of War is kind of the premiere online experience on consoles--
Cliffy-B: Number one game on Xbox Live!
Ben: It does everything so well, everything is integrated with the co-op... it’s just a good system. What are your thoughts on how well Live is doing on the PC?
Cliff-B: Well, I haven’t played a lot with it; we have our internal integration... Games for Windows Live just feels like another cool version of Xbox Live on Windows. It’s streamlined, easy to use, instead of blades, it’s like a rectangle. That’s it. You know, it’s good to unify that experience on the PC, I know that, everyone kind of has their own solutions, to find a unified solution for all the PC developers is a good thing.
Ben: One last question and then I’ll let you go. What did you think of the Killzone 2 footage shown?
Cliffy-B: I thought it looked hot!
Ben: Did you?
Cliffy-B: Yeah, the funny thing about that game is that the lead programmer (Arjan Brussee, from Guerilla Games) and I, actually, that was the programmer I did Jazz JackRabbit with back in the day.
Ben: Really?
Cliffy-B: Yeah, and that’s always like, you know at E3 a couple years ago that was being compared to Gears and everything, so everything is kind of full circle. It’s like, I’m ***ing Professor X, and he’s Magneto.
We’d like to thank Cliffy-B for his time, and yes, he really is as animated in real life as you’d imagine.
