I confess I haven't really been sold on HD rumble before now. Ball counting in 1-2 Switch is impressive, but only because it forces you to focus on the rumble to the exclusion of all else. In the middle of actual games, I've either barely noticed the rumble or been seriously annoyed by how excessive it is, and either way never been terribly sold on HD rumble as an important feature.
But Shantae is seriously next-level. Some of the early effects are impressive: you can feel bombs going off and the resulting fires burning. You can feel her dancing, with the rumble perfectly in time with the animation. But the most amazing effect so far is getting mermaid form and swimming underwater.
I don't even know how to describe it beyond "holy shit, it feels... watery". There's this "sloshy" sort of liquid movement to the controller as you swim, and you really have to feel it to understand what I'm talking about. It was impressive to the point that I made my wife try it and it was a literally jaw-dropping experience for her.
I do hope other devs take note of this. This is what you are supposed to do with a feature like HD rumble. |
