World’s 1st Blue-Ray Player Unveiled

By Cho Jin-seo
Staff Reporter

A model poses with Samsung Electronics’ Blue-ray video player which was launched on Thursday.

Samsung Electronics Thursday launched the world’s first Blue-ray disc video player, which has about five times the performance of DVD players in terms of storage and picture quality.
Blue-ray is one of the two technologies along with HD-DVD that are expected to replace the existing DVD format as the next-generation standard of home video entertainment as early as next year.

Samsung held a global launching ceremony in New York Thursday. But it won’t sell the new player in South Korea until August because of a lack of localized movie titles, the company said.

“What is important for the commercial launching is the software. We are waiting for Hollywood studios to make contract with Korean movie distributors on Blue-ray titles,” said Yang Dae-oh, senior manager of Samsung’s digital media business, in a meeting with reporters yesterday. ``Also, the delayed launch for the Korean market is to avoid the World Cup period as all attention is on that.’’

The Blue-ray technology uses a blue-violet laser beam to read and write to the disc. Because of the shorter wavelength of the blue-violet laser, compared to the red laser used for DVDs and CDs, it can store up to 25 gigabytes of information on a single disk, about five times more than a DVD.

A Blue-ray disc can store over two hours of high-definition video at a picture resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels, which is superior in quality to the DVD format which has a resolution of 720 by 480 pixels.

In the competition for the next-generation video format, the Blue-ray group has been led by Sony, while another Japanese firm Toshiba is pushing for the HD-DVD technology.

Until recently, Samsung had said that it would sell players for both the Blue-ray and the HD-DVD formats. However on Thursday, the firm confirmed that it had changed its stance, to give full support to the Blue-ray technology.
Hollywood favors Blue-ray rather than HD-DVD. About 80 percent of movie titles will be sold in the Blue-ray format,’’ said Samsung’s Yang, adding that only one (Universal Studio) of seven major filmmakers in the U.S. is against the Blue-ray.

In addition, the introduction of Sony’s PlayStation 3 will play a deciding role in the battle between Blue-ray and HD-DVD, since the game console will be Blue-ray compatible,’’ he said.
However, the alleged support from the movie and game industries will not bring immediate success for Blue-ray _ the hefty price tag of the players will be a major setback.

Samsung’s BDP-1000 player will be sold at $999 in the United States, and at 1.4 million won in South Korea with bonus movie titles. On the other hand, DVD players usually cost less than $300 and even the high-tech HD-DVD players are being sold from around $500 in the United States. Sony’s PlayStation 3, which will be released in November, also will be only $499 and $599 depending on the options.

``We don’t anticipate big sales this year,’’ Yang said. `` The price will gradually go down, until it matches that of the PlayStation 3.’’

The launch of the first blue-ray player coincided with the first Blue-ray compatible PC from Sony. Also, Sony Pictures, the television and film unit of the Japanese firm, released seven Blue-ray movie titles on the same day including ``Hitch,’’ ``50 First Dates’’ and ``The Fifth Element.’’
