北京时间5月5日晚，英超第37轮拉开战幕，曼联作客曼城，上半场第32分钟C-罗纳尔多创造一个点球并亲自罚进，下半场曼城也获得一个点球，但范德萨用脚将球挡出，最终1-0战胜曼城积88分，与切尔西的差距暂时扩大到8分。

周中曼联被淘汰出了冠军杯，因此全队把注意力放到联赛上，而曼城虽然保级无忧，但主教练皮尔斯随时可能下课，前博尔顿教练阿勒代斯有望取代他的位置。曼城最近四次主场作战曾经三次击败曼联，不过本赛季他们在主场只打进10球，如果再不进球将打破桑德兰的单赛季11球的纪录。本场比赛，孙继海继续坐在板凳席，瓦塞尔与姆蓬萨组成锋线搭档，曼联方面，费迪南德伤愈回到主力阵容，***客串右后卫，锋线上史密斯获得首发机会。

第74分钟，C罗前场断球后反击，约翰逊背后拉人吃到一张黄牌。第77分钟，迪科夫背后踢倒维迪奇，后者受伤倒地比赛为之暂时中断。第79分钟，鲍尔冲入禁区，***将其拉倒，裁判再次判罚点球，但鲍尔明显是假摔。范德萨拖延时间吃到一张黄牌，瓦塞尔将球射向中间，范德萨扑错方向但仍然用脚将球挡出。

第86分钟，曼联用奥谢换下鲁尼加强防守。第88分钟，孙继海在防守时受伤倒地。经过治疗后，孙继海回到场上，但第89分钟又被C罗放倒。最终，曼联1-0拿下德比，与少赛一场的切尔西差距扩大到8分。

Boss salutes Reds' courage

Sir Alex Ferguson saluted his players’ fortitude after a hard-fought 1-0 win at Manchester City put United within touching distance of the Premiership title.

The Reds bounced back from Wednesday night’s Champions League defeat to AC Milan with a steady win at Eastlands, a result which means Chelsea have to win at Arsenal on Sunday to fan any hope of retaining the title.

“We’ve a great chance now,” Sir Alex told Sky Sports. “What you saw today was human courage. Coming back from Wednesday night and having to get through travelling and lack of rest, the players have shown fantastic courage today.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty was the only goal of the game, with Edwin van der Sar pulling off a late save from Darius Vassell’s spot kick.

United were far from their best, but were largely untroubled by a City side which displayed little attacking ambition until the game’s latter stages.

“I think today you haven’t seen the real Manchester United because there was tiredness there, you could see that the sharpness in our game wasn’t there as normal,” said Sir Alex.

“It wasn’t a great performance, but derby games can be like that and also the pitch was very, very lively, which didn’t suit us. It was a long day, but City never actually tried to beat us.

“They were happy at 1-0 I think. Just towards the end they get a penalty kick, which I don’t know whether it was, but we got through it.”

Despite the possibility of watching his side become Premiership champions for the ninth time, the Gaffer confirmed that he will not be watching Chelsea’s trip to the Emirates Stadium.

“A draw will be fine,” he said. “Hopefully we can get the result we want tomorrow. Saying that, if we had to go to Chelsea on Wednesday (and get a result) I would look forward to it.”

“I’m due to go to Spain tomorrow but there’s maybe a complication with the flights, so I may have to abandon it. If it’s a good day I’ll go for a game of golf, but I won’t (watch the game).”
