[LEAKED] CEX-to-DEX Conversion Method
I'd rather have this thread opened aiming to have some questions asked and answered.
I've read a lot of posts on other sites which are clearly misleading for the major part of the user base and it is better to keep it open for discussions here.
There are videos and half-truths about running DEX firmware. Although it was pointed out earlier in this thread what a DEX can and can't do, some continue to speculate how it will allow 3.55CFW backup functions + 4.** game support.
Regular users would expect to load their backups the usual way (via a manager), but it won't happen. It was explained (year or so ago, and now again) that ps3gen tools (for DEX) require a USB HDD dedicated for this (4 games in separate partitions/images) + fake-signed executables (self/sprx/eboot).
You cannot patch the 3.60+ DEX firmwares with peek/poke/etc to allow 'extended' functions like backup loading from HDD, because we don't have the keys to create a firmware (same as the regular OFW firmwares).
You also can't burn DVDs/BDs with 3.60+ games, because the sony tools require that you provide a fself (not retail/dumped from original disc) executables (eboot/self/sprx files) to create a MasterDisc (which would work on DEX). To create such files one would need the 3.60+ keys. Since older keys up to 3.56 are available - you can create masterdiscs for all games you have, which don't require 3.60+.
Same as above goes for creating BD-EMU images (they are essentially masterdiscs) for 3.60+ games. You can't create bdemu image, because the files you provide must be valid and you can't create them (read above for DVD/BD discs).
You cannot create a PKG from a 3.60+ disc game (you wish you could use ebootFIX), but that's not possible because the disc files are still encrypted with 3.60+ and you need to decrypt them to elf so you can create a fake_npdrm_self (eboot.bin).
You can't play 00.09 - 03.55 games on DEX unless you know how to decrypt/unself and make_fself all eboot/sprx/self files for a game and then create USB image (1 of 4) to use with the DEX build-in BDEMU (using Sony ps3gen tools).
The good thing is that you can play your original PS3 Game discs (00.09-04.10), use Showtime (if properly prepared in a pkg), use emulators by Squarepusher, use Comgenie's File Manager or multiMAN(without backup loading) (if properly prepared in a pkg).
The Blu-ray Movie playback is restricted with DEX firmware, so you won't be able to play movies.
I know many skip that part for some reason, but that's not having mM on a DEX and requires a lot of work, which normal users won't find straightforward. Not to mention the usage of some Sony tools, which may lead to other consequences to the user.
A developer doesn't really need a DEX to create a homebrew. Great apps like Showtime, Emulators, Text Viewers, File Managers, ThatOtherDev's Games, multiMAN and a lot more didn't require their coders to have a DEX.
Hopefully this brief explanation would allow more people to know what to do and how to do it. Sadly this CEX2DEX stuff brings cool features, but features that most people won't find really useful and easy to get to.
To know all that stuff only requires some reading and comprehension of the docs/specs - you don't need a DEX to know how it works.
