Even though the series is one of the oldest and still-published in gaming, the Street Fighter franchise still continues to grow. To commemorate its 15th anniversary, NubyTech is releasing the Official Street Fighter Anniversary Edition Controller for Xbox.

Hard-core Street Fighter fans may scratch their heads with a thought of "WTF?" as SFII came out in 1991, only 14 years ago, not 15. The original Street Fighter hit arcades in 1987, which means its 15th anniversary has long passed. We'll just play along and pretend it's next year...

Essentially identical to its PlayStation 2 counterpart, the Official Street Fighter Anniversary Edition Controller moves the Black and White buttons in line with the other main face buttons, replaces the triggers with simple buttons and removes the analog sticks altogether. Obviously, this controller is made specifically for fighting games as most every other type of genre would be all but unplayable.

The controller isn't intended to be an all-around stick though; it's designed to be not only a fighting game controller but a Street Fighter collector's item as well. Available with Guile, M. Bison or Akuma graphics and design, the controllers feature an animated hologram on the controller's center that shows one of their moves when the controller is rotated. The controller's other graphics and color scheme matches the specific fighter as well.

The box that the controllers ship with isn't meant to be quickly tossed in the trash. Like NubyTech's other Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat controllers, the box's front flap flips up to reveal its contents, and the flap itself has a large-scale graphic of the featured character covered with a prism effect (it's shiny, in other words). Inside the box you'll also find a Street Fighter comic by UDON.

The box and the comic are fairly nice, but the hologram on the controllers could look much better. It's a low-res hologram, meaning that you can see jagged edges on the character. It's also only a few frames of animation, which while we can't really fault it for that, we would have liked to have seen a sharper image for so little animation.

The controller is extremely lightweight, enough so that it feels practically empty. It's a reasonably thick controller, so its empty feeling is even more pronounced. This is the first aspect of the controller that makes its construction feel a little cheap; it just feels more like a prototype with an empty shell than a finished unit.

The main six button layout is certainly nice for fighting games. The Black and White buttons are located to the right of the A, B, X and Y buttons, in line with the default Street Fighter controls on Xbox (This puts the fierce buttons on the far right). The buttons themselves feel a little cheap, however, and not quite as polished as those on the standard Controller S. They almost feel as if they're made out of balsa wood and then covered with a laminate. The buttons aren't exactly terrible, but they're certainly not as nice as the standard Controller S' buttons are.

The D-Pad features a circular base, just like the Controller S. It's a bit looser though, possibly making it easier to pull off certain moves, depending on how you like your D-Pads. However, dialing in diagonals is hit-and-miss with this D-Pad. Trying to do things like jump forward sometimes results in jumping straight up, which can mean you'll land on a fireball rather than past it. Frustrating, to say the least.

Conclusion
The Official Street Fighter Anniversary Edition Controller for Xbox from NubyTech makes for a decent collectible, but only an OK controller. The inclusion of a comic book and an almost overly-stylish box up the controller's collectibility factor, but once you plug it into an Xbox you're left wanting a little more.

The sometimes missed diagonals can be very frustrating and the overall cheap feeling of the controller leaves a lot to be desired. Still, aside from the diagonal problem you probably won't blame the controller on any losses, so if you can get used to really hitting those "in between" directions, it'll serve you decently.

Street Fighter fans may want to pick one up for collection and display purposes, but general fighting fans will probably just want to pony-up for a real fighting stick..
