Nintendo to launch DS game system in November

Japanese game giant Nintendo announced Tuesday that its forthcoming DS (short for Dual Screen) portable game system will launch in the United States on Nov. 21 for a retail price of $149.99.

DS, widely seen as a follow-up to Nintendo's hugely successful Game Boy line, features two back-lighted color screens, stereo sound, voice recognition, and wireless communications (both WiFi and a proprietary protocol developed specifically for DS). DS, which comes with both standard game buttons and a touch-sensitive screen and stylus controller, plays Game Boy Advance cartridges as well as games on ROM cards.
Nintendo's price will include a pack-in game called Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt as well as PictoChat, communications software that lets users send messages and drawings to each other.
"We're really excited about the price," says Nintendo vice president of marketing and corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan. "That kind of pricing makes DS immediately attractive to the mass market, and that is where Nintendo needs to be."
In a surprise move, Nintendo executives decided to launch their new system in the West first. Japanese-made game systems typically launch in Japan first, then in the United States, and finally in Europe. In a pre-briefing with USA TODAY, Kaplan was unable to specify dates for the Japanese and European launches.
Nintendo is not the only company launching a new handheld game system. Console market leader Sony Computer Entertainment, manufacturer of the PlayStation 2, has announced plans to release a handheld system called PSP (short for PlayStation Portable). Though Sony has promised to launch the system in Japan this fall, the consensus among industry insiders is that PSP, which features a large, ultra-high resolution screen and plays games and movies on mini DVDs, will not make it to market until sometime next year.. |
