001. Introduction
=================

As you may have discovered--or as you soon will learn--there are numerous ways
to buff up each of your party members in Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil
Saga.  Any skills you obtain are learned by downloading items known as Mantra.  
Each character can download every Mantra once certain conditions are met (that
is, once you've downloaded the Mantra located on a given 'path'), but later
ones are costly and the time required to gain skills can be daunting.  As such,
it makes sense to compile a Mantra guide for the game.  That's what this is.

Skills fall into four categories: Physical, Magic, Shield and Auto.  You start
out with the ability to choose four skills in total.  This number increases to
six once your characters reach level 10, which they will likely do early in
the game.  Then at level 20, you gain the ability to use a total of eight
skills, which will remain your maximum throughout the remainder of the game.  
As such, there are many abilities that you will have to leave unused as you
progress through the game.  Any skills you wish to use must first be 'Set' to
the character that has learned that skill.

Acquiring skills is both relatively simple, and complex.  It's simple because
the process never changes; you just keep paying for those downloads you desire,
then having your characters devour enough enemies to gain new abilities.  Yet
the process is also complex, in that learning skills in a certain order may
speed up the process, while making oversights can double or even triple the
time required.  With that in mind, it's time to look at a few basics.

============
002. Hunting
============

As you play through the game, you'll discover that the easiest way to quickly
improve your available skills is to devour your opponents.  When you do so, it
means you've used what is known as a 'Hunt' skill.  You will find them in the
'Physical' skill category.

Hunting is a risky business, particularly early in the game before you've
learned improved hunting skills.  Despite being fused with demons, the
protagonists have rather delicate stomachs and do not take kindly to the notion
of devouring their opponents.  Therefore, you'll want to quickly change that by
learning skills such a 'Devour.'

The problem with this and other low-level hunting skills is that it doesn't do
much damage to the opponent.  Suppose you're fighting a monster.  First you
wear it down with physical attacks.  Then you decide to eat it.  However, doing
so costs some of your protagonist's health points, and the attempt may not be
successful.  If the monster has too much life left--or if you just happen to be
rather unfortunate--then you will simply watch the enemy flash red but not
vanish.  This is not a happy circumstance.

As you learn better hunt skills, this will occur less frequently.  Your attacks
will do more damage and in some cases you can even scarf down multiple enemies
at once, provided their health is low enough.  This is especially true of
enemies who are frightened.  You'll know your enemy is especially susceptible
to a hunting attack when you see fearful bubbles appear over its head.  The
game will let you know that an enemy is vulnerable, but sometimes only one or
two monsters in a group is afraid.

When a monster is frightened, your attack will do around twice the damage.  
This is very good, but you need to remember that a monster may be frightened
before its health has run low enough that you can safely consume it.  Proceed
carefully.

There's something else to remember, too.  You may recall that I said the
protagonists don't always take kindly to what's on the menu.  Suppose you've
had Heat devour a few monsters.  The next time he does, you may watch in
surprise as he develops a stomach ache.  Supposing he does, he won't gain any
points from that battle unless you cure him before it ends.  Not only that, but
some of his turns may be wasted (if the battle is not over) as he pats his
stomach and groans uselessly.

Therefore, it makes sense to follow a general strategy.  Have each character
quickly learn the first three Mantra skill sets, up to and including the 'Holy
Beast' Mantra.  This one includes the 'Iron Stomach' skill, which prevents your
characters from ever developing stomach aches when it is equipped.  This will
be a valuable friend for the game's duration.  It also will allow your
characters to develop any other skills you wish for them to learn much more
rapidly.  By spending the time to start out with those abilities, you will save
yourself much grief down the road.

Because the game will keep moving as you're building up your skills, you may
deviate from this slightly.  That's fine.  Just make sure those early skills
remain your priority whenever possible.  You'll thank me later.

003. Choosing Paths
===================

Because there are numerous Mantra skill sets to download, you could easily
spend twice the time it takes to beat the game just learning skills.  Unless
you find this notion particularly appealing, you'll want to instead focus on
just those skills that will be necessary for monster battles.  More
importantly, you'll want to remain mindful of what powers will make you a
powerhouse when it comes time to contend with the game's diffi*** bosses.  No
matter how good you are, many of the boss monsters will mop the floor with you
if you've been foolish in your choices.

Fortunately, it's really not that diffi*** to build up your power.  While it
may seem rather limiting, just follow what the game prescribes.  Your
characters have pre-determined specialties, and there's no reason to fight
those or to try much in the way of augmentation.  Follow the general rule:

Serph = Ice
Heat = Fire
Argilla = Earth
Gale = Force
Cielo = Bolt

What this means is that when you choose new Mantra for Serph, you'll want to
avoid maxing out anything other than his Ice skill set.  Additionally, it pays
to learn the opposing skills that he is otherwise weak against.  Have him learn
how to absorb fire damage, or else enemies will hit him with that as a way to
get extra turns in battle.  Do so with each of the five characters, as you
never know when a favorite character will be called away from your party for a
time as the plot dictates.

Additionally, it's never a bad idea to learn at least a few healing skills,
even if you are satisfied with Dia.  And there are plenty of spells that can
beef up your party members for long, drawn-out boss encounters.  Fail to put
those to use and you may come to regret it by the end of the game.

Now that you know the basics, it's time to take a look at the grid.

004. The Grid
=============

Mantra downloads are positioned along a grid that sort of runs a series of
lines and sort of doesn't.  To gain skills, you must follow certain paths.  For
example, you can't jump right to the most powerful of lightening spells if you
haven't learned the simple ones.  Additionally, special Mantra downloads will
sometimes become available for apparently unrelated reasons.

Below, you'll find a copy of the primary chart, with a list of the Mantra
names.  Details about each specific Mantra will follow in the next section.

As closely as my limited diagramming skills allow, the above chart reflects
what you should see if you use the 'Get Mantra' command at any save terminal.  
You can view the 'zoomed out' version of the grid in-game by pressing the
'square' button.  What you see there will roughly mirror the chart above.  When
you begin the game, the vast majority of the final icons will not be lit.  That
happens as you access low-level skills up above.

It's also important to know that there are some hidden Mantra that only appear
for each character if you fully maximize any one skill set.  The easiest way to
do this is to acquire the Wikipedia Mantra, which will then reveal the final
set of Mantra.  The Wikipedia Mantra itself is only available once the
character in question has obtained both the Godly Beast and Queen Mantras.  
Once you have the Wikepedia Mantra earned, then you can gain the final secret
Mantras (which are not listed on the chart above).

Now that you know how the grid is laid out, let's look at each of the Mantra
downloads in detail.

Each Mantra you may unlock has certain skills associated with it.  This section
will serve as a quick reference tool.  It will explain what each numbered
Mantra (numbered in relation to the chart above) allows you to learn.  Also,
you'll find the price to unlock the Mantra and various other details.  The
final three Mantra downloads listed on this site are the 'secret' ones
mentioned above, and do not appear on the chart.

006. Conclusion
===============

This guide may not be as thorough as perhaps it could be, but it should give
you a good idea of what your path should be as you train each of your
characters.  As always, keep in mind that though the game will allow you to
customize any character as you see fit so that he or she is a virtual
powerhouse, your time is best spent just maximizing those skills you'll find
most valuable.  There's not really much point in having one guy who has the
best ice and fire skills in the game.  But in the same token, it's worth
learning how to defend against powerful skills of various other types.

With some tinkering, you should find yourself playing through the game rather
easily.  Max out one elemental skill set for each character, learn some
powerful healing and attack skills, and you're on your way.  And if you need
any help from there, well, you should consult a full walkthrough.

This is a list of enemies you will meet as you progress through the game. I'm
going to sort them by area, then alphabetical order. I will include the enemy
even if it has appeared in previous dungeons, and I'll include some tips on
how to kill certain troublesome enemies.

If anyone has any additional information to add to this FAQ, kindly email me
with the info. I need help finishing off the drops since they are not revealed
when i use a Spyglass, as well as confirming the existence of Sergeant
Girimehkala.

I would also like to mention that event enemies might have additional skills
or stats which cannot be checked by a Spyglass. I will NOT include these
spells in the list. If anyone can provide accurate information on these event
enemies, it would be much appreciated. I'll credit you for it.

Since I cannot view Boss information, I'll just list their weaknesses and any
strategies I used. I will also use some information from a great and wonderful
japanese site, http://gamekouryaku/ddsaga/index.html. This site is THE site
if you need info on SMT: DDS...if you understand Japanese. Even if you don't,
you can make use of the maps.

I have not included any optional boss information, because I feel that Kain's
FAQ has already done a wonderful job at it.

Killing Omoikane
----------------

The only way I've ever killed this guy is by Reverting Serph equipped with the
Magatama (attack 200 ammo), taunting with my second character, passing with
the third character, and shooting Omoikane with Serph. Works all the time...he
takes around 450 damage. Remember, the only way you'll damage it is using
guns, and with a single target shooter like Serph or Argilla. Gale MIGHT be
able to kill it with 2 or 3 shots...that's a big MIGHT. I've never tried it
personally.

I've NEVER personally killed more than one Omoikane.

I've encountered Omoikanes at Coordinate 136, the Deserted Ship, the Anahata
Waterways, and most frequently in the Manipura Waterways.

Status Effects list
-------------------

Poison: Inflicted target takes damage whenever it does an action other than
      pass.

Stun:  Inflicted target has a high chance to be unable to do the selected
      action. You can pass or use items though.

Panic:  Inflicted target has a high chance to do a random action (usually
      revert or withdraw in my games).

Sleep:  Inflicted target is asleep and skips its turn, taking up a full turn.
      Can be awaken if physically attacked.

Mute:  Inflicted target cannot use spells and abilities that require MP.

Curse:  Inflicted target takes damage equal to the damage it deals.

Charm:  Inflicted target goes against its allies, usually curing the enemy or
      attacking its allies.

Ache:  Occurs when you overeat or bite off more than you can chew. Inflicted
      character has a chance to not do a selected action, and will not gain
      AP at the end of a battle unless the ache is cured before the battle
      ends.

Hunger: Only 2 bosses can inflict this on your characters. Inflicted character
      becomes uncontrollable and either attacks your allies, or skips its
      turn.

I wanted to include a full skills list so anyone who reads this FAQ will have
something to refer to when they view a monster's info...it won't help you if
you don't know what Tentarafoo does. I will include every skill available in
the mantra grid though, even if there are a few skills enemies will never
have, for your convenience (and mine as well...so I don't have to sift through
all the enemy's skills).


- Physical attacks -

Poison Dart:   Phys and poison damage to one target multiple times.

Venom Claw:    Light phys and poison damage to one target.

Raving Slash:  Light phys damage to one target, chance to inflict panic.

Death Spray:   Phys damage to one target multiple times, chance to inflict
           curse.

Stun Needle:   Phys damage to one target multiple times, chance to inflict
           stun.

Mad Rush:     Light phys damage to random targets.

Double Slash:  Light phys damage to random targets.

Hell Thrust:   Light phys damage to one target.

Hell Fang:    Moderate phys damage to one target.

Comatose:     Light phys damage to one target, chance to inflict sleep.

           Only the boss Usas can use this move, and its a combo move
           that can only be done if Usas has her Unicorns.

Spiral Edge:   Moderate phys damage to all targets. Only the boss Camazotz
           can use this skill.

Dragon Quake:  Heavy earth damage to all targets. Only the boss Rahu can use
           this skill.

Death March:   The chatterskulls you encounter on the deserted ship has this
           skill. It self destructs and deals MASSIVE almighty damage to
           all your characters. Beware...

Hunger Wave:   Ravana and Hari-Hara can use this skill. It has a chance to
           inflict hunger on all targets.

Now this is what i call a boss. Smack him with normal attacks when he's flying
(he's strong or nulls most spells in this mode i think), and when he's in
Guard mode, cast Tera on him; its the only way to damage him when he's
guarding. He will cast Rage, which gives him two half-turns, and will usually
do a Spiral Edge, which damages everyone for moderate damage, then cast Guard.
Make sure you have Media for this battle, and its best if everyone has Tera.
Shouldn't be a problem if you know what to do.

Void Expel before you attempt to fight her...other than that its physical
damage all the way. When she's alone just smack her with everything you've
got, be it physical or magic attacks,and Media when she casts Whirlwind. When
she summons her pet Unicorns, start casting Void Expel every turn to negate
the Unicorn's Hama spells as well as the devastating Seraphic Lore spell. With
Void expel, this boss is a piece of cake. Attrition should win you this
battle...just chip away at her life. Ignore the Unicorns...she'll just summon
more.

Maribel Base (second time)

He's back with a vengeance. This time, the first thing he does is cast Psycho
Rage, which gives him a whooping 4 half turns, which would result in 2
Baphomets being summoned as well as putting himself in Guard mode. Be sure to
Void Death until both the Baphomets are dead, or the two of them can just wipe
your whole party out with death spells. As usual, he will use Spiral Edge, so
Media up when that happens. Other than that, he's no different from the first
time; hit him with Tera when he's in Guard mode, and smack him with physical
attacks when he's not. Remember to kill the Baphomets first; you can find
details below at the Coordinate 136 section.

This time he's serious...he has a few killer moves that can really hurt you.
You should still smack him with physical attacks when he's flying, although I
don't think you can catch him in his flying state...usually he's in Guard
mode. Nuke him with Terazi, and chip away at his life. To make things easier,
make sure you have Void Force, because he will use a new skill that does heavy
force damage to your party. It's that big a problem when you're in demon form,
but when he turns you into bats, that force skill will deal MAJOR damage. So
Mediarama up if you're still alive...
If Cielo has buffs like Tarukaja and Makakaja, use them to buff yourself.

*BOSS* Cerberus
Are you ready for the most challenging boss in the game? Actually its just my
own opinion...but i really think Cerberus is hard. Even with all the necessary
spells, you might still get killed. If you have Dekaja it might be
considerably easier.

The most effective attack on Cerberus are ice attacks. Although it doesn't
give you press turns, its the only truly effective element on his three heads.
He loves to cast Power Charge and Mind Charge...so get ready for some real
pain. He also has High Counter, so please don't bother attacking him
physically. Its already bad enough.

The left head casts -kaja spells as well as death spells like Mamudo, and can
cast Dekunda and Dekaja. This makes it a prime target for you...if he buffs
too much, you're gonna die real fast, especially if you don't have Dekaja. It
also casts Ice Repel quite regularly.

The right head casts Diarama on either the centre head or the left head. You
could also choose to take this head out first.

Cerberus can use a combo attack that does HEAVY fire damage, so be sure to
cast Void Fire or Fire Drain every turn until he only has one head left.

When the centre head is the only one left, he will start using Gate of Hell.
The only thing you can do is Mediarama/Mediarahan up and equip yourself with
death resist to prevent the stone effect.

Brute's Base (Main Area)
************************

Note: There are 3 sub bosses here that are actually enemies you will encounter
later on as you progress.

The Catoblepas in the red area is weak to fire, and has around 2500 HP. He can
cast Stone Gaze, Psycho Rage, Materadyne, and has High Counter. Take him out
with twin boosted Agidynes and Void Death every turn. The Materadyne isn't
that scary.

The Isis in the green area can only be damaged by elemental spells and
almighty attacks, and should have around 2000 HP. She will summon replicas
which are exactly the same, and they can do elemental combos like Mazandyne.
She also attacks with all sorts of -dyne spells, so try to cover your party's
weaknesses with resists. Other than that she can't do anything else...not that
hard.

The 5 small Nidhoggrs in the blue area could become a problem if you let the
centre one Cannibalize the others. I think the centre Nidhoggr has around 4000
HP, while the small ones have around 500 or so. Try to take out the 4
surrounding ones with your most powerful elemental spells like Mazandyne
coupled with boosters, or physical spells like Chi Blast or Bloodbath, if you
have it. The centre Nidhoggr will keep summoning a small Nidhoggr to eat until
he has eaten 4 of them; then it starts to get serious. It will start buffing
itself and cast ice spells, so if you have Dekaja all the better. But its
still easier just to stop him from growing that big...

If you read Kain's FAQ, it should be a piece of cake. I'll just state some of
his strategies here.

In his first form you'll have to guess where he is, through Sera's directions.
And if you think you can cheat past the system with Attack All or some
multiple target spells, no you can't. Your attacks will all miss, only single
attacks will connect. Just use normal attacks to whittle his life down, he's
not particularly powerful in this form.

His second form is much more powerful. He will cast Hunger Wave that even the
all-powerful Null Attack cannot block, but it isn't much a a problem since
Sera will cure one character per turn. Simple cast Force Repel every turn and
wait for him to cast his Infinite Wind, and let it repel against him.

He will also cast Megidolaon twice in a row...which can be devastating. So
make sure you heal up at every opportunity.

Other than that, the most reliable way of damaging him is through twin boosted
elemental spells. And he doesn't cast Dekunda or Dekaja, so buff yourself and
debuff him to the max, and you should be able to win.

*FINAL BOSS* Hari Hara
Unusually easy for the last boss in the game. The first two forms are not that
hard, but make sure you have Null Death to nullify her Vaikunta move. She also
has another attack that deals quite a lot of damage to one target...I think
the damage can reach 500 if you're not buffed. Buff yourself and debuff her to
the max since she will rarely cast Dekaja or Dekunda; the only time she casted
Dekaja was when i started the fight off with a Tarukaja and a Makakaja.

Her second for is also quite easy to figure out...Simply use a twin boosted
-dyne spell to take out the Gold Protection Core (it has 400 plus life), and
use some physical attack that hits all targets to wipe out the remaining ones.
From now on just kill the one core she summons every turn, and spend the rest
of your turns chipping her life off. It's that simple.

Do not leave her with too many cores, or she will get MANY press turns...and
please make sure you cover your weakness with the corresponding resist. It
should be understood by now.

This section contains the list of skills. The skills are listed with its name,
a description of what it does, what it targets, its MP or HP cost, and the
mantra that contains it. For the TARGET label, Random means the skill does
a range of hits randomly distributed against the enemy party. The other terms
should be self-explanatory.

The skill list is very long so use CTRL + F to make searching easier.

Technique skills are skills that cost a percentage of a character's max HP to
use. Most techniques are either physical or hunt type but the most powerful
ones are almighty type. The power of techniques are generally based on a
character's STR stat. These are the only skills that can do critical hits and
that trigger counterattacks.

skills are character-specific. Obtaining these skills requires loading files
and giving the correct response to certain questions.

2.29 Human Form     -Auto skill. Start battles in human form.
               -Load a DDS2 clear game file and start a new game. The
                skill will be available right at the beginning.

2.30 Pyriphlegethon  -Mega fire damage against all enemies. Strongest fire
                skill. Can only be used by Gale (70MP)
               -Load a DDS1 clear game file into DDS2. Gale will
                receive this skill at the start of the final dungeon.

2.31 Seraph Lore    -Expel type spell against all enemies. Reduces enemies'
                HP by 80%. Never misses against enemies not immune to
                expel. Can only be used by Argilla (30MP)
               -Load a DDS1 clear game file into DDS2. In that DDS1
                clear game file, you must have chosen "We aid without
                treachery" when Gale asked Serph about the Maribel
                tribe. Argilla will receive this skill at the start of
                the final dungeon.

2.32 Reincarnate    -Mega almighty damage against all enemies. Can only be
                used by Seraph (99MP)
               -In the Karma Tower, pick the second choice, "We will
                never join you" when Madame Margot asks the Embryon
                about helping her. Seraph will receive this skill in
                the final dungeon.

3.                        COMBOS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just like in DDS1, the party can use special attacks called combos in battle.
To enable and use combos, certain combinations of skill must be equipped. If
the skills you equip form a combo, a message indicating its discovery will
pop up during your battle turn (if it doesn't do so right away, simply use the
pass command until it does). The combo will then be added to the Combo List in
your status menu. To access combos in battle, simply press left or right in
your command menu to show the list of use-able combos.

Combos require that each participating character must have enough MP or HP
to meet the combo cost. The characters must also not be afflicted with status
effects (such as sleep, mute, charm) that prevent them from using skills.
Also, there must be enough press turn icons to perform the combo. Finally,
the skills that form a combo must be equipped on different characters.

To check which combos you can use based on your current skill set up, check the
Combo List option in the status menu. You can use any combo that is not grayed
out on the list.

While most of the terms in the list are obvious, there are a few that require
a bit more explanation. If a skill starts with the word "one-", that means the
skill must be a single-target skill (i.e. one-fire skill = agi, agidyne). If
a combo component looks something like Bufula/Bufudyne, that means you can use
either skill.

4.                      ISSUES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.1 SKILL/COMBO TRANSFERRING
--------------------------------
Skills and combos learned from a previous DDS2 playthrough can be transferred
to a new game. Simply load the clear file and start a new game+. The skills
and combos will be available right at the start. There are some caveats:
First, the new game must be NORMAL diffi***y to transfer your skills. The
skills don't transfer to a HARD mode game no matter what mode the clear game
file was. Second, the unique skills Seraph Lore, Pyriphlegethon, Reincarnation
do not port over to the new game. You'll have to get them the usual way.

4.2 MISSABLE COMBOS
---------------------------------
It is possible to miss the shot combos involving Serph, Sera, Roland, and
Heat. Once in the final dungeon, you no longer have the opportunity to obtain
Serph and Sera's combos. Get their combos before the last area.

Roland and Heat's situation is more complicated. If Heat will be your last
party member in the final dungeon, then you must have gotten Roland's combos
earlier if you want a complete combo list in one play. If Roland will be your
last party member, then it's virtually impossible to get a complete list in
a single playthrough (since you can never get Heat's combos). Although you do
control Heat in one battle, the game does not allow Heat to revert to human
form at that time.

Of course, you can always transfer the combo skills to a new game+ and
complete the list using two or more playthroughs. Just remember that this only
works for NORMAL mode games.

4.3 AUTO SKILL STACKING
----------------------------------
Some auto skills have similar abilities but with different levels of
effectiveness. Some of the skills can be combined to increase the effect.
Here is a partial list of skill combinations that may or may not stack:

DEFINITELY STACKS
---------------------
Amp/Boost     - Equipping both elemental boosters grealty increases the
            damage of elemental spells. In fact, this is what people
            refer to when they talk about "twin-boosting" spells.
HP boosters    - Equipping all three will raise your max HP by 60%.
MP boosters    - Equipping all three will raise your max MP by 60%.
Chakra/Mana Walk- Restores 15% Max MP every solar noise phase

SORT OF STACKS
---------------------
Counter skills - No, this doesn't allow you to counter one attack with every
            counter skill. The game just randomly picks one counter to
            use. This is a good method of increasing your chances of
            countering an attack.
MIN/MAX Critical
+ Critical   - Same deal as the counterattack skills. The game randomly
            chooses one.

Horror/Petrify/
Paralyze    - Enemies and characters can only be affected by one status
            ailment at a time. Again, which skill the game will use is
            selected randomly.

DOES NOT STACK
---------------------
Ingest/Devour Mana  -Devour Mana takes precedence over Ingest Mana so you can't
              increase MP gained when hunting with this combination.
