The 2020 AMD Financial Analyst Day presentation is currently in full swing, and, as you would expect, it’s been packed with new information and roadmaps for the company’s future Zen 3 and Zen 4 CPUs and RDNA graphics cards, which you can catch up on right here. That said, there was one specific moment that will be of specific interest to console gamers.
Of course, AMD silicon will be powering both the Microsoft and Sony’s upcoming consoles, and we know that the Xbox Series X 12 TFLOP GPU will leverage the new RDNA 2 architecture, but what about the PS5? Rumors have been swirling it will stick to the older RDNA architecture. Well, during AMD’s presser David Wang of the Radeon Technology Group took to the stage to announce RDNA 2 GPUs will boast hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and his wording very much implied said RDNA 2 silicon will be in both next-generation game consoles. ” As a company, AMD strongly believes in the value and potential of raytracing. – Chandrashekhar said – RDNA 2, the next-gen, will support raytracing. Both the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation will natively support raytracing with Radeon hardware. We will make sure to have content that players can actually take advantage of with these GPUs. “


Supporting the earlier news on the subject, the PS5 *will* support hardware raytracing according to comments from Mithun Chandrashekhar, Project Management Lead at AMD.
Speaking in a press briefing at the end of January (and only now coming to light), Chandrashekhar confirmed that hardware raytracing will be a common shared functionality in both PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles, allowing third-party developers to fashion multi-platform titles that leverage the technique across both platforms:
AMD as a company…strongly believes in the value and capability of raytracing. RDNA 2, the next-gen, will support raytracing. Both the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation will support hardware raytracing with Radeon natively. We will be sure to have the content that gamers can actually use to run on those GPUs
We believe in our raytracing, and we will have it when the time is right.
Made possible by RDNA 2, which has been designated as the next generation of AMD GPUs (Graphics Processing Unit), it certainly looks like that both the PS5 and Xbox Series X will boast a far larger leap in visual fidelity over current generation consoles such as the PS4 and PS4 Pro.
